Technological Trends For Divorce

Lord knows the fun we could have had with the money Elizabeth Taylor could have spent with us providing her with online divorce forms. It is one of the irony’s in that the age we live in that not only does divorce make big news but every sordid tawdry headline gets throw to the world in a blink of an eye. Imagine the field day the entertainment media could do covering Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s on/off relationship. We could find out not only what they were fighting about but what she had for lunch. Then again if the same dynamic were around in their heyday like it with the technology available now it would not be unthinkable that Liz would be tweeting about her dating habits and dishing the dirt on her own.

So with that in mind it is amazing that while technology is used to communicate all types of information about celebrity relationships and dating habits so many people still tend to have an archaic and misconceived approach on getting divorced. Being able to get low cost divorce information online is easier then ever but actually using the same technology to get started is foreign. Most tend to think it will end up in court with a stuffy judge and smooth attorneys. It is an abject irony however that with all of the technology designed to make our lives easier it seemingly as if we actually are more rushed and have far less leisure time.

And while when we think of celebrities we think they have enough disposable income to where they can pay the extra money to have their divorce lawyers and divorce attorneys spend the time sorting through the details, for the regular every day folk like us time and money are generally two things that are not in surplus. So then, why not have the best of both worlds and save time and money and start the divorce process online? The lengthy convoluted idea of getting divorced, in fact, could not be any further from the truth. Provided you and your partner can both agree on basic parameters of divorce it is legally possible to take part in an amicable divorce and spare all of the negatives associated with divorce.

With you literally have everything you need to get started in the divorce process. Simply choose your state and fill out some basic information and you are basically on your way towards getting started with the rest of your life. One of the items that we are very proud of as well is that using online divorce forms and those who use them; this is a testament that people can still take the high road in life. When we come to a cross roads does not always mean fighting like cats and dogs and starting world war 3 over a simple difference of opinion or two people who have discovered they are incompatible with each other.

If you and your spouse have made the decision to get divorced, take it a step further and decide what is the best route for all parties to move forward in a manner that will end up with the best results for all parties involved. It is not uncommon these days for ex-spouses to actually have improved relationships and a greater understanding of each other once the pressure of matrimony has been removed. Online divorce forms can be the stepping stone to that type of relationship where you can look at your ex with a positive view in lieu of a sneer or negative emotion.

Strange Divorce Laws

In lieu of the holiday season and all of the time we will be spending with relatives, both sane and otherwise, its only fitting that we divulge in a little hilarity and explore some of the legal, and illegal, antics that can occur in this great nation, all pertaining to marriage and divorce. Hopefully you can picture someone you know, perhaps even someone in your family, and attach them to one of these whacky laws and laugh just a little at their expense. Enjoy.

It is legal to have a Marriage by Proxy for Military Personnel

Marriage by proxy, which means someone can stand in for a bride or groom who can’t be present at his or her own wedding for legitimate and documented reasons, is limited to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. But of the four states that allow the practice (California, Colorado, Texas, and Montana), Montana is the only one that allows double-proxy weddings. Essentially, neither the bride nor groom has to show up. Convenient? Or is it just weird? You be the judge.

Bird Killing?

If you thought the days of “proving” your manhood were primal and long since forgotten, then you would be mistaken. In Truro, Massachusetts, a groom-to-be must “prove himself manly’” prior to marriage by hunting and killing either six blackbirds or three crows. If he fails to do so, the wedding is considered as dead as the birds.

It is Illegal for Married Couples to Sleep Nude in a Rented Room

Despite the fact that the infamous witch trials were over 300 years ago, religious conservatism is still alive in Salem, Massachusetts; at least on the law books. The law is still in effect that married couples are not allowed to sleep in the nude in a rented room. So, who exactly checks to see if the rules are being followed here? Not sure we’d like to know.

It is illegal for Married Couples to Kiss in Public on Sundays

It is one of the weirdest laws to date. The real question is, why was it ever implemented? Perhaps to keep the sabbath holy, but isn’t that going a little far? It is true. The police can cuff you and throw you in jail, that is, if you live in Hartford, Connecticut and you’re caught kissing in public on Sunday.

It is illegal for Palm Readers and Fortune Tellers to Officiate a Wedding

It’s most likely that your wedding was officiated by a religious figure or judge. Or, if you’re a bit more eccentric than some, you had a friend become ordained online so he or she could marry you. Good thing you went with the tried-and-true: New Orleans has made it illegal for palm readers, fortune tellers, mystics, and the like to officiate a wedding. You have been warned.

Most Marriages Can Be Saved, New Book Claims

Most marriages can be savedA new book by co-authors William J. Doherty and Leah Ward Sears contends that most marriages can be saved, and that it’s typically the “average” divorce that can cause the most damage to children.

Doherty, a professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Couples on the Brink Project, and Sears, a partner at the law firm of Schiff Hardin and former chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court from 2005 to 2009, have written Second Chances: A Proposal to Reduce Unnecessary Divorce.

This week, the pair released an excerpt from their book and in it characterize assumptions that “Divorce happens only after a long process of misery and conflict; and, once couples file for divorce, they don’t entertain the idea of reconciling,” as wrong.

Average Divorce Is ‘The Most Harmful To Children’

In addressing the reality of divorce, the authors write:

“Research over the past decade has shown that a major share of divorces (50 to 66 percent, depending on the study) occur between couples who had average happiness and low levels of conflict in the years before the divorce,” the authors claim. “Contrary to popular belief, only a minority of divorcing couples experience high conflict and abuse during their marriages. Most divorces occur with couples who have drifted apart and handle everyday disagreements poorly. It is these ‘average’ divorces that research shows are the most harmful to children.”

Shining a bit more light on this reality, sociologists Paul Amato and Alan Booth agree. “Our results suggest that divorces with the greatest potential to harm children occur in marriages that have the greatest potential for reconciliation.”

Why Most Marriages Can Avoid The Divorce Outcome

In Doherty’s own research, 2,500 divorcing parents “well along in that process” were asked whether they would be willing to submit to reconciliation services. “In at least 10 percent of these divorce cases, both spouses were open to efforts to reconcile — and in another 30 percent, one spouse was interested in reconciliation,” Doherty said. “Results for couples earlier in the divorce process were even more promising.”

Many spouses are so cut to the core by the words, “I want a divorce,” that they give up too early, the book contends. While the desire for divorce may be more lopsided, it doesn’t mean that “No” is the only answer.

If you’ve reached the point that do-it-yourself divorce is the option that you’re considering, give some thought to what factors are driving you apart. If DIY divorce is still your best option, we can help. But don’t give up on a marriage that’s still worth fighting for.
